For the first of two “cameo” programs, 12 voices of the Chorale will create musical transcendence as they sing works by a variety of composers set to texts by the Persian Empire’s great Sufi poets, including Jaluddin Rumi (the most widely-read poet in the U.S. today) and Hafiz Shirazi, as well as compositions by mainstream composers, such as Brahms, Duruflé and Eric Whitacre, who were inspired by the writings of the mystical Sufis. Prominent on the program will be the women of the ensemble performing a movement from young, Minnesota-based composer Abbie Betinis’ exotic Songs from Behind the Caravan. Two noted Santa Fe-based instrumentalists will be featured: Angela Gabriel, who performs on various Middle Eastern percussion instruments, and cellist Dana Winograd. Readings of complementary poetry will be interspersed with the musical selections. Pre-concert lecture one hour before each performance. |
