Into Eternity

One of the rare films to nab a 100% fresh critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes after premiering at NYC's Film Forum, INTO ETERNITY is Danish director Michael Madsen's peek inside Onkalo, a nuclear waste storage facility in Finland. It's also a visually and sonically stunning, existential leap into the very future of civilization via an enormous underground burial chamber that will continue to be under construction until the 22nd century, that is to be built to last for 100,000 years. Think "Lord of the Rings" meets "2001: A Space Odyssey" - only scarier since everything you see is real. - Lauren Wissot

The talk of the 2012 Berlinale and a hit at this year's Rooftop Films Series NYC, West German director Marten Persiel's THIS AIN'T CALIFORNIA thrills on so many levels it ultimately defies description, much like its stunning skateboarding tricks caught on archival super 8 and set to 80s German synthpop. To call it a doc about a gang of skateboarders on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall doesn't nearly do justice to this punk nostalgia trip and fragile time capsule, to this alternative history of the German Democratic Republic, and personal tribute to a lone teenage rebel with a universal cause. - Lauren Wissot

Nancy Please
Sun. Oct. 21, 2012 5:15 PM
at Warehouse 21
Since its premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, Andrew Semans's truly original psychodrama NANCY, PLEASE has been wowing audiences with its riveting cast and oddball premise. After moving in with his girlfriend, Yale PhD candidate Paul Brawley (Will Rogers - featured in last year's Santa Fe IFF hit "Happy New Year") realizes he's forgotten his copy of "Little Dorrit" back at his other apartment. Doesn't sound like the premise for a suspenseful satire until one factors in that Paul's dissertation is dependent on his handwritten notes in the margins of the book - and that his ex-roommate Nancy is a bit of a passive-aggressive psychopath. What Semans calls an exploration of the "perverse allure of victimhood" is also as disturbingly funny as "The War of the Roses." Lauren Wissot

Taped
Sun. Oct. 21, 2012 7:00 PM
at Warehouse 21
No surprise that Columbia Pictures recently bought the rights to an American remake of Diederik Van Rooijen's high-flying thriller TAPED, ostensibly a film about a Dutch couple whose vacation escape to Buenos Aires to repair their broken marriage turns into a fight for their lives after they accidentally witness a corrupt cop's shooting of an unarmed man. Like Holland's answer to Michael Haneke, Van Rooijen takes sheer delight in punishing his characters - capturing every detail with glee as their insular drama morphs into a Grand Guignol affair - ultimately offering up a sophisticated metaphor, one in which emotional violence is made both visual and visceral. - Lauren Wissot
